President attacks western diplomats
ZIMBABWE will not tolerate piecemeal removal of sanctions by the European Union because they have affected the country in various ways, President Mugabe has said. The Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces was speaking at a State banquet held in honour of visiting Malawian President Mrs Joyce Banda on Tuesday evening. President Mugabe thanked Sadc countries for calling for the removal of the sanctions and said the absence of some top Western diplomats at the banquet despite being invited showed that they were not willing to co-operate.
The US ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Bruce Wharton and his British counterpart Deborah Bronnert sent junior representatives to the dinner after they and most of their fellow colleagues in the European Union failed to attend the welcoming event at the Harare International Airport. Notably present at the banquet was the EU ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Aldo Dell’Ariccia who stood up in a bid to register his presence while President Mugabe was castigating his colleagues.
