Storm leaves trail of havoc
STRONG gales and heavy rain left at least one person dead, others seriously injured and many homeless, as it cut a trail of destruction from Queenstown to Mthatha yesterday. Last night there were reports that a number of houses, three hospitals, cars and a shopping mall had been damaged. Provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo confirmed that one person was certified dead on arrival at Frontier Hospital in Queenstown while nine others admitted with serious injuries would be transferred to Frere Hospital in East London today.
Gqobana will also visit Cofimvaba Hospital today. Provincial disaster management spokesman John Fobian said the storm hit first around Whittlesea about 3pm, later moving around Queenstown, Cofimvaba, Cathcart and Mthatha.
Fobian told the Daily Dispatch a 40m long wall collapsed at a mall in Mthatha. “We sent a search and rescue team to the mall.
Three hospitals lost their roofs in the strong wind. At Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, part of the laundry and store’s roof was blown off.
