Tomana Takes Oath As New Prosecutor-General
Former Attorney-General, Johannes Tomana has been sworn in as the country’s Prosecutor-General by President Robert Mugabe at State House, Harare on Wednesday afternoon. Mr Tomana took the oath of office and loyalty as the head of the new National Prosecution Authority (NPA) established by the new constitution. The new constitution created a separation of mandates between the office of the Attorney-General (AG) and that of prosecution by the creation of the NPA, which reports annually to the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.
The AG, who is the chief legal advisor to the government, sits in the Cabinet and in Parliament where he can contribute to debates but has no voting rights. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ms Virginia Mabhiza said there is urgent need to expedite the enactment of the law to operationalise the authority....
